TOBACCO FREE ENVIRONMENT

Rhode Island has made great strides in creating a Tobacco Free Environment: there is a statewide ban on smoking in most workplaces and indoor public spaces; smoking is prohibited on state beaches and at many municipal beaches and parks; and there is an array of local retail ordinances banning flavored nicotine products, price promotions, and discounts. But there is still much work to be done, with active opposing forces and new products constantly entering the market. TFRI is here to provide you and our partners with the most up-to-date and timely information in the fight against tobacco. Learn about the issues and strategies below and check back often for ongoing updates.

Smoke Free Workplaces

Smoke Free Workplaces
Rhode Island’s landmark smoking ban in workplaces – including bars, restaurants, sports arenas, convention facilities, and many more – has now been in place for more than a decade, but that doesn’t mean our work is done. Second hand smoke is still a critical health issue and protecting our citizens from exposure at their workplaces should be a worker’s right. The fight continues to ban smoking on all college campuses (Johnson & Wales and Brown University’s Alpert Medical School have led the way) and in casinos. Check here for the latest news and tools.

Tobacco Free Beaches / Parks

Tobacco Free Beaches / Parks
Many Rhode Island cities and towns have banned smoking at their beaches and parks – including Barrington, Westerly, Charlestown, North Providence, Narragansett, and Portsmouth. A smokefree policy is in place on all state beaches. However, many municipalities have not yet adopted such policies and smoking continues at many beaches and parks. Where does your town stand? We have compiled local ordinances for your reference.
