TRENDING PRODUCTS

The tobacco industry works hard to come up with new and innovative ways to retain existing customers and recruit a new generation of young smokers. This means tobacco free advocates must navigate a changing landscape of products that use bright colors, fruity flavors, and discreet devices to disguise themselves. Below are some materials and resources to familiarize yourself with the latest trends in cigarette alternatives so that you can more effectively combat tobacco use in your community.

Electronic Cigarettes

Electronic Cigarettes
The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and similar devices like vaporizers and “pens” is on the rise, due in part to their dubious claims of beings a “safe” alternative to traditional tobacco products. The science on them remains inconclusive at best and early research indicates some troubling questions about their safety. The fact that they’re smoke- and tobacco-free, allegedly producing only “harmless vapor,” and lack of clear guidelines governing their use in public, has led to increasing social acceptance and, thus, popularity for e-cigarettes. The one thing that is not in doubt about e-cigarettes is that they contain nicotine, the highly addictive drug that is at the root of America’s tobacco problem.

Little Cigars

Little Cigars
Little cigars are just like cigarettes: they’re about the same size, have a filter and are sold in packs, just like cigarettes. They both contain the same toxic compounds and carcinogens. But little cigars are wrapped in tobacco leaf instead of paper. Why is that difference important? Because it gets little cigars classified as cigars, which means they’re not subject to the same taxes and regulations as cigarettes. Little cigars are cheaper and less regulated, and often sold in sweet, fruity flavors – which make them a popular tool for recruiting youth smokers.

Hookah

Hookah
Hookah has become increasingly popular in recent decades through lounges and bars dedicated to it. The hookah is actually the tall, often multi-stemmed device through which shisha, a type of flavored tobacco, is smoked. Because of its long cultural tradition (hookah smoking is a widely accepted practice throughout India, the Arabic world, and central Asia) and social, communal settings, hookah can seem more like casual leisure than tobacco use – it is even popular with non-smokers. It is also legal in certain establishments, which has caused hookah use to spread from a small set of dedicated lounges to an increasing number of more traditional restaurants. The wide array of sweet and fruity shisha flavors and the fact that hookah lounges can often admit patrons younger than 21 has made it an effective product for appealing to young smokers.
