When we talk about fighting tobacco use in our communities, what we’re really talking about is fighting commercial tobacco use. Traditional tobacco use for medicinal and sacred purposes among Native Americans and indigenous peoples is something entirely apart from the sale and use of mass-produced commercial products like cigarettes, cigars, and chewing tobacco. Understanding the difference is an important part of organizing anti-tobacco efforts that are culturally competent and sensitive.
