UNDERSTANDING COMMERCIAL TOBACCO USE
VS. TRADITIONAL TOBACCO USE

There is a long history of traditional tobacco use in Rhode Island. The Narragansetts and other Native peoples use tobacco for medicinal and sacred purposes that are far removed from addictive, mass-produced commercial tobacco products. It is important to differentiate between these uses in our work. Doing so allows us to both be sensitive to the traditions of Native communities and more effectively work to reduce commercial tobacco use in those same communities. These resources will help you understand traditional tobacco use and its importance in Native cultures.
